It is amazing what is underneath you when you walk the streets as we found out when visiting one of our regular customers in the centre of Birmingham. What appears to be a standard cast iron manhole cover revealed a gigantic pumping station!!!

Safety is paramount when entering confined spaces such as this. Harmful gases are present in these areas therefore appropriate venting is required and gas detectors a necessity along with harness, tripod and winch system. Our operatives attend mandatory confined spaces entry courses to ensure they are all up-to-date.

The picture (right) here illustrates the two pumps in the bottom of this chamber that are responsible to discharging all the waste water vertically up and out onto the main sewer line. Some pumps are so powerful that they pump an astonishing 200 litres per second!!
